About Viking Village

Fjörukráin, located in the heart of Hafnarfjörður’s Viking Village
Where Icelandic tradition, warmth, and hospitality come together for an unforgettable experience.

Family-run business
Jóhannes Viðar Bjarnason began his career in the restaurant industry as a waiter at Naustið, where he worked for many years. He says he was deeply influenced by the atmosphere and interior design of the historic restaurant, and it was there that his true interest in hospitality and restaurant operations first took shape.
In 1990, he took a bold risk and purchased a small, struggling restaurant by the shoreline in Hafnarfjörður. At the time, tourism in the town was almost nonexistent, and many considered the purchase reckless. But Jóhannes saw opportunity where others saw problems. He had a clear vision: to create a destination that offered not just food, but a memorable experience.
The result was Fjörukráin. With daring ideas built around a Viking theme, feasts, and a lively connection to Icelandic history and culture, the concept initially met with surprise and skepticism. Planning authorities did not fully understand his vision, but Jóhannes persevered. Gradually, interest grew. Viking feasts and cultural evenings became popular, and Fjörukráin developed into one of the most well-known and frequently visited destinations for travelers in Iceland.
He later expanded into hotel operations and opened the Viking Hotel, which has been enlarged in stages alongside the growth of tourism. Today, the hotel offers numerous rooms, with further development planned. The business has evolved into a complete experience where accommodation, dining, and culture come together.
His family has played an active role in the operation, and his daughters now work alongside him in running the business. In addition to Fjörukráin and the Viking Hotel, Jóhannes also operates Fisherman’s Village on Álftanes.
Despite decades of experience, his driving force remains the same as in the beginning. For Jóhannes, this is not just a business, but a life’s work — built on creativity, determination, and a genuine passion for Icelandic culture and hospitality. With optimism, he continues to look ahead and turn new ideas into reality.

Our charming Hotel Fjörukráin offers comfortable accommodation in a setting full of character and history. Each room is uniquely decorated, inspired by Iceland’s past, and just steps away from the harbor, art galleries, and the town’s natural beauty.
