The Viking Market in Hafnarfjörður is the oldest, largest and most important event of its kind in Iceland. Hafnarfjörður has been a stomping-ground of Vikings, demonstrating most aspects of Iron-age culture, ships, cuisine, handcraft, storytelling, archery, games, music and battle demonstrations since 1995. Many artists have come from Europe and America to join in celebrating the memory of our ancestors. Occasionally, opportunities arise to bring forth unexpected things, anachronisms to underscore even further how the Vikings of old (and modern times) can co-exist and arrive at a strong historical union.

From the beginning, the emphasis has been on authenticity. Guests at the Festival are meant to feel as if they have been taken back 1,000 years, and as if by miracle they have arrived at an ancient summer market. Ships from foreign lands have come ashore, and merchants have taken out their goods and begun to trade. The atmosphere is festive; music, jesters and dancing girls, good food and drink. But when everything seems to be peaceful, a battle breaks out and men kill each other with great vigour and seemingly evil humour.

At the 2008 Viking market, new and fresh ideas will emerge. New heroes are called and tested with veterans known through the years by loyal Festival guests. A total of almost 200 Vikings, both domestic Icelanders and foreign invaders, are expected. For further information visit www.fjorukrain.is or call 565 1213

Soon the thorri season will start with its old tradition Icelandic food. It begins January 23 and lasts until February 22. Through the years, Fjörukráin, has been a very popular place to have the old tradition food, this national restaurant has the right atmosphere  for this kind of feast.

This year as other years, we will have the thorri buffet and our singing Vikings to entertain our dinner guests. After the dinner a very popular Icelandic group, Papar, will play until 3 in the morning so people can dance. They will entertain the five weekends during the thorri season.

A new chef, Stefán Páll Jónsson, started working with us in November.  He has been working through the years in  respected restaurants in Europe and in Iceland, we know for sure that he will make our team even stronger. Birna Rut Viðarsdóttir will be the head waiter. She has been working here the last few years in the summertime and along with secondary school in the evenings and on weekends.

We will start the new year with full power. As said before we there will be live music and I know the popular group Papar will bring a lot of live into our restaurant and will entertain people that like to dance after the dinner until 3 o´clock in the morning if they like.

We will have special offers in the menu both on weekends and on weekdays, there will be good price and good quality.

We have already started to prepare the Viking festival which will be this year from June 12 and will end June 17 which is our independence day. We are expecting more than 200 Vikings staying here at the festival. They come from Europe and of course Iceland.

In December our hotel was almost fully booked on weekends and our Christmas buffet too. We are expecting a lot of guests to our hotel during the thorri season.

So we are looking forward to the future with a lot of hope in our heart and we hope this will be a good year which bring us all happiness.

I wish you all a happy new year,
